Airline Pilot
Generalities
Becoming an airline pilot will require more experience (flights hours), more knowledge (written exams) and, of course, more time.
The experience can be acquired in various ways.
Firstly in school, then in air work or instruction or as a co-pilot.
The theory requires a lot of personal work and we can help you with our ground school and our numerous written exams.
Requirements
- Two written exams : the SAMRA (MTO, Navigation aids, Flight planning)and the
SARON (Navigation, Air laws, Exploitation), with a passing mark of 70%. - 1500 hours total flight time with 250 hours as pilot in command, including 100 hours in night flight
and 100 hours in navigation. - A valid IFR rating on multi-engine including 75 hours in IFR.
The previous requirements don't take into consideration the experience as pilot in command under supervision, hours on glider or ultra-light aircraft. Exceptions are envisaged in the regulation and, in fact each case has to be analyzed in order to determine the minimum requirements.
Possibilities
After completing the professional licence, the multi-engine and IFR ratings, here are three options in order to acquire the experience needed:
- Become a flight instructor, which gives the possibility to increase hours of flight, experience and knowledge while working on single-engine and multi-engine aircrafts.
- Pass the IATRA exam with 250 hours of flight as pilot in command and apply as co-pilot (difficult with 350 hours of flight)
- Do aerial work such as air photography, advertising streamers, fire patrol, paradrops and others.
The most popular option is obviously to become a flight instructor because it gives more experience, self-confidence and opportunity to work with different type of people with various sensibilities and experiences. A flight instructor, as part of his duties, does not fear to let someone else fly the aircraft. He has the capacity to analize, to quickly understand and explain things which makes him attractive for many companies.
